My Background

Waiting to photograph Chad Trivette, running to raise funds for a cancer center in Spruce Pine, NC.

Photography is very much about light, not just good or bad lighting, but the infinite range of light and its impact on everything. Sunlight, as it touches, radiates the fronds of maiden grass is fascinating. I love reflected light on water surfaces, especially the dancing light on the  North Toe River or back-lighted maiden grass, where I lived for twenty four years in Mitchell County, western North Carolina. Recently returning, after thirty two years, to New Bern, N.C., I anticipate many similar and new coastal area opportunities.  I studied documentary photography at Penland School of Crafts with Asheville photographer Ralph Burns, as my wife, Billie Ruth, taught basketry there. This encouraged the display and presentation of my work in several venues. I now own a Canon EOS 50D SLR and a Canon 5D Mark II.  When I hear others describing what they see in a photograph, I delight in the simple fact that every set of eyes on the planet is unique, including mine.

Photography as Communication

I am surrounded both by natural beauty and interesting people. I use my camera to document the world and then print images with a focus on the magic I find in daily life. My pictures tell my stories.

Sharing Stories
